At Home With … Emma English

Welcome to the second interview in our series of profiles with some of our talented and inspiring friends of Mayfield.

This month we chat to the lovely Emma English! You might have seen Emma's friendly face around the store more frequently lately as Annie has been on maternity leave. Emma has been helping Annie to take care of the store for a while now so we thought this was a good opportunity to find out a bit more about her!

Hi Emma! Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hello! My name is Emma and my friends usually call me Em. I’m 26 and I grew up in a small country town, Hamilton, which is about two and a half hours away from Geelong. I completed Year Twelve at Monivae College which I loved, I have such a lovely bunch of friends from home. I have also completed a Diploma of Beauty Therapy at Elly Lukas Beauty Therapy College in Melbourne. I still do a little bit of beauty from home and I love all things skincare and make up as well as fashion!

I have also done a little bit of travel, I’ve been to Thailand, New York, Bali and New Zealand. My boyfriend is from Zimbabwe so I’m dying to get to Africa see that beautiful country with him too!

That’s so lovely! And can you tell us a bit about working at Mayfield?

I started working at Mayfield in May 2019. I absolutely love coming to work every day. Our customers are so lovely, I really enjoy getting to know everyone – watching all the dogs go past each day is a highlight too! Working with and learning from Annie is also special. I’m very lucky to have a job I love, and a boss who I call a friend.

Have you always loved fashion? Tell us a bit about your fashion journey so far…

I sure have! As soon as I started working, I would spend all my pay on clothes! I have developed a true passion for fashion, whether I’m dressing up to go out for dinner, to come to work or just spending time at home, I love making time to look and feel my best.

I’ve been to the Melbourne Fashion Festivals over the years as it’s such a fun way to see clothes on people while also getting dressed up with girlfriends and having some wine!

What items are you loving at the moment – both at home and work?

At home I’ve really enjoyed the relaxed look – I’ve particularly loved matching tracksuit sets this season. They are so comfortable at home but then if you need to head to the shops, just pop some white sneakers on and a coat over the top!

For work I’ve loved the knitwear we’ve had in store, so I’ll usually wear some jeans with my white Supergas and a knit. My Friends with Frank Teddy coat has come in so handy this year! Every year their coats and jackets are just amazing! Definitely a favourite.

What’s coming into Mayfield this spring that you’re excited about?

I was actually so lucky and got to help Annie choose pieces from Elka Collective that are coming in for this spring and summer, I can’t wait to see it all once it arrives! I’ve already got my eye on a few beautiful dresses, you'll have to wait and see!

We love to support local; do you have any favourite places to visit in Geelong that you’d love to tell us about?

One of my favourite places in Geelong would have to be The Arborist, for a special dinner. The food, service, staff, cocktails and atmosphere there is all amazing! I also love Alma

I love going to the Geelong Cellar Door for some cheese and wine. A couple of other favourite places I really like are Jack Rabbit Vineyard and Common Ground Project as well as Pakington Pantry and 9 Grams near the store!

A few businesses I love following on social media and visiting often are As Daisy Does, Frankie Say Relax and Botanicals by Luxe

Definitely some gorgeous places to visit in there! Speaking of beauty, with your background, what are your best tips for looking after your skin?

I honestly believe that you should invest in your skin care and it will pay off, just remember that not everything will suit everyone though so sometimes it can be tricky to find the right products for you.

On my days off I like to be make up free and just let my serums and moisturisers sink in. Once a week I exfoliate, do a mask and then use a vitamin A product on my skin.

I’d also say spend money on your serums, they are the game changers in your skin care routine – I use the Botanicals by Luxe hyaluronic serum, it’s super hydrating – like giving your skin one big drink! And the O Cosmetics B3 Serum this helps to even skin tone and boost collagen.

Cleansing and exfoliating are also so important, I love the feeling of washing my makeup off at the end of each day. I use the botanicals by luxe reship cleanser, its gentle, hydrating and removes all of my make-up. Nothing better than having fresh clean skin!

It’s also good to use an exfoliant once to twice weekly to remove all the dead skin cell build up. Exfoliating your skin will help to give you a radiant and smooth complexion. I use the O Cosmetics 3 in 1 Fruit Peel exfoliant.
